Welcome to the Zonkaku Project, which presents the works of Zonkaku (1290–1373), one of the most prolific authors of the Jōdo Shinshū tradition of Buddhism. Zonkaku was the eldest son of Kakunyo (1280–1351), the grandson of Shinran (1173–1263). Zonkaku's works are remarkable for their erudition and explanatory value, but also for their engagement with common Jōdo Shinshū adherents, particularly women, and with other Buddhist sects and popular religious practices.
This project, based at Musashino University, aims to present rigorous, annotated translations that are nonetheless accessible to a non-academic, non-Japanese-speaking readership for the first time. The translation committee of the Zonkaku Project consists of Dr Alexander James O'Neill and Rev Dr Ryoei Nanjo, based at Musashino University. It is advised by Rev Dr Jérôme Ducor, based at the University of Geneva. Now in its preliminary stages, it will eventually result in the publication of four volumes, titled The Collected Works of Zonkaku. This collection will be mirrored in open-access form on this website as it is completed.
